The publications from, and policy-level engagement because of, all three studies culminated in an example of relevance at policy level (Hammersley, 1992). In 2016–2017 I formed part of a team of education researchers in South Africa who drafted the National Policy for Rural Education in South Africa, which was gazetted in 201832 (Department of Basic Education, 2018).
